Safe, The Stranger, and now Stay Close are devious untanglings of past crimes, relocated to British soil and given an extra dollop of escalating plot tension. You know what you’re getting with a Harlan Coben novel and it’s been much the same with Netflix’s adaptations of the American author’s popular thrillers over the past few years. They are without swagger and are unlikely heroes, which makes their progress all the more compelling.Įddie Izzard and Cush Jumbo in the thriller Stay Close, which is based on a Harlan Coben novel. Ron Howard is making a Hollywood movie about the rescue starring the likes of Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell, but in real life, their respective characters, Brits Richard Stanton and John Volanthen, were dedicated loners who embraced the solitude of being underwater and underground. The cultural specifics of the region and the Thai volunteers are recognised throughout, but the focus is the squad of world-class cave divers summoned when military specialists were turned back. The narrative, from the perspective of officials and divers, is comprehensive, and you swiftly feel as if you’re inside the porous limestone cave system, which extends off multiple branches for many kilometres. There are gaps – a few scenes were recreated by participants, while the team members are not interviewed because they have sold their story rights to Netflix – but they are not debilitating. The filmmakers fill in the breathless news coverage with extensive interviews and archival footage.
